Peter Morrison
Born in the coastal town of Westport, on New Zealand’s South Island, Peter “PM” Morrison found beauty and solace in nature from an early age, and spent much of his formative years exploring, fishing, hiking, hunting, and surfing.
In his early 20s, he moved to Australia, where his passion for surfing took him to the warm waters of Queensland’s Gold Coast.
In 1984, “Morrison Media” launched Australia’s Surfing Life (ASL) magazine.
By 1990, ASL had established itself as Australia’s market-leading surf title – no small feat for an independent publishing company, competing with larger, internationally owned publishing houses – and the early 2000s, Morrison Media ran a stable of a dozen active lifestyle titles including skateboarding, bodyboarding, longboarding, snow sports, motocross and more; as well as creative lifestyle titles Chik, Frankie and Smith Journal, with offices in Sydney, Auckland and Los Angeles as well as its Gold Coast headquarters, where staff did their best to live Morrison Media’s mission statement to “Be the Best and Enjoy it the Most.”
At the heart of Morrison Media’s success lay Peter’s understanding of the power of quality in imagery. As well as shooting early trips for ASL, PM put in countless hours on the lightbox, scrutinising transparencies, hunting for the magic images that ticked the boxes of technical criteria (sharpness and colour), while also delivering impact, meaning and story. Quality attracts quality, and over the years, Peter got to work closely with some of the best action sport photographers in the world.
Through this time, PM managed to keep his wanderlust satisfied with regular adventures – mostly surf related, exploring Indonesia and the Pacific with noted explorer Martin Daly – but the responsibility of his namesake company limited the scope of these opportunities.
In 2011, Peter sold Morrison Media, relocated to Byron Bay and, along with wife Amanda, began stamping his passport in earnest, determined to capture some of the planet’s most beautiful, natural places in his viewfinder.
At the time of writing, Peter is in training for a three-week hiking adventure in Patagonia.
The Chase for Wonder continues.
